O World Monuments Fund publicou uma lista de monumentos ao redor do mundo que merecem cuidado especial em 2018, destacando 25 patrimônios culturais do mundo todo que atualmente estão em risco devido a ameaças econômicas, políticas ou naturais. Abrangendo mais de 30 países e territórios, esses monumentos possuem valores culturais inestimáveis que datam desde a pré-história até o século XX.

Alguns dos principais temas abordados na lista deste ano pelo World Monuments Fund encontram-se ameaçados devido a:

  • Conflitos armados (o Souk em Aleppo, na Síria, um centro comunitário queimado durante o conflito, o Minarete de Al-Hadba em Mosul, no Iraque, um marco histórico destruído pelo ISIS, a Cidade Velha de Ta'izz no Iêmen, uma cidade antiga tomada pela guerra; e a paisagem cultural de Sukur na Nigéria, local atualmente controlado por Boko Haram)
  • Desastres naturais (Locais no Caribe atingidos por desastres naturais, Golfo do México e México, e a cidade de Amatrice, na Itália, quase totalmente demolida por um terremoto em 2016)
  • Locais representativos de Movimentos Sociais (Direitos Civis do Alabama, locais importantes para o Movimento de Direitos Civis dos Estados Unidos na década de 1950 e 60)
